The OC's costume designer reveals Marissa Cooper wore FAKE Chanel bags on the show Alexandra Welker has revealed some insider fashion secrets about the hit Noughties teen drama

If you were a teenager in the early Noughties, then you're likely to have had a huge obsession with The OC .

The American TV show followed the often scandalous lives of wealthy and stylish teens in the high-class world of Newport Beach.

It rocketed cast members Benjamin Mackenzie, who played tearaway Ryan Attwood, Mischa Barton(troubled girl-next-door Marissa Cooper), Adam Brody (the awkward but witty Seth Cohen) and Rachel Bilson (Seth's crush Summer Roberts) to fame and the show ran for four seasons.

When we weren't shocked by the drama, we pored over every detail of Marissa and Summer's enviable designer outfits.

But as The OC celebrated its 15th anniversary this month, Season One costume designer Alexandra Welker dropped some insider information.

“We started with a little tiny budget, which was a challenge because everything had to look super high-end,” Welker told Page Six .

“There was absolutely no borrowing [from brands] involved either, because nobody had ever heard of us, so they were very leery of loaning anything.”

Marissa was one of the richest teens in The OC and it proved to be a bit of a challenge for Welker, who wanted the character to look the part.

So much so, that Welker revealed that Marissa actually wore FAKE Chanel bags during the first season.

“I’ll be honest: Those Chanel bags that she carried, those weren’t something I could have on my budget,” Welker said.

“But I found this amazing store in Downtown LA that sold the best-looking fakes I’d ever seen! So we used some really, really good knockoffs.”

It did seem rather outlandish that a school girl would have a Chanel book bag, but it was something we were all envious of and secretly dreamed that we would own one day.

Luckily, once the show took off, designer brands began falling over themselves to dress the cast.

In fact, Mischa Barton later became an ambassador for Chanel fine jewellery.

As the saying goes, fake it till you make it.
